Men’s Ice Hockey Bounces Back with 4-1 Win at Worcester State

WORCESTER, Mass. (November 5, 2016) – A night after suffering a 4-1 loss at Southern New Hampshire, the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team flipped the script and picked up a 4-1 win on the road at Worcester State on Saturday night in non-conference play. A second-period power-play marker by freshman forward Alex Lester (Methuen, Mass.) would stand as the game-winner at Hart Recreation Center.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-2-0, while Worcester State falls to 0-3-0.

Franklin Pierce took at 2-0 lead with a power-play goal early in the first period, and then another power-play marker early in the second. Just 63 seconds into the night, junior forward Jonathan Haun (Buffalo, N.Y.) put away his first goal of the season, with sophomore forward Nick Indelicato (Pembroke, Mass.) and sophomore defenseman Blaise Kilroy (Spring City, Pa.) contributing assists. Later, at the 6:47 mark of the second period, freshman forward Alex Lester (Methuen, Mass.) came up with his first collegiate goal, as freshman forward Matthew Toombs (Pleasanton, Calif.) and senior defenseman Alex Schleper (Sutton, Mass.) provided the helpers.

Worcester State cut the deficit in half at the 15:57 mark of the second. Senior forward Alex DeWitz notched his first goal of the campaign, capitalizing on a setup by sophomore forward Mike Moran and sophomore defenseman Cody Weaver.

Franklin Pierce opened the third period with an insurance marker at the 5:48 mark of the final stanza. The unassisted tally came via junior forward Evan Marek (Enfield, Conn.), who scored his first goal of the year. The Ravens tacked on an empty-net goal at the 17:56 mark to create the 4-1 final, as senior defenseman Taylor Fletcher (Leominster, Mass.) salted the puck into the empty cage for his third goal of the season.

Junior goaltender Tom McGuckin (Clayton, N.J.) tallied 28 saves against 29 shots on goal to pick up the win (2-2-0) in net for Franklin Pierce. Meanwhile, sophomore Cory Lignelli (0-1-0) made 18 saves against 21 shots and took the loss for Worcester State.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Nov. 12, when they return home to host Assumption in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon.
