MANCHESTER, N.H. (November 4, 2016) – The Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team fell behind early on Friday night, then trailed 3-0 after two periods at the Ice Den, which would prove to be a hole too deep to climb out of. Sophomore forward Nate Indelicato (Pembroke, Mass.) struck early in the third, but the Ravens would go on to suffer a 4-1 loss at the hands of Southern New Hampshire. Freshman forward Jared Goudreau scored twice to lead the way, while graduate student forward Joe Collins dished out three assists for the Penmen.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-2-0 (0-1-0 Northeast-10), while Southern New Hampshire improves to 2-0-0 (1-0-0 Northeast-10). The game was SNHU's 2016-17 home opener.

Southern New Hampshire opened the scoring just 5:03 in on Friday night. The Franklin Pierce defense got caught on a pinch at the offensive end, as senior forward Nathan Bergeron chipped the puck out of the zone to sophomore forward Brett Strawn, allowing the latter to steam down the left wing and lead a 2-on-1 the other way. As he skated through the left circle, Strawn drew the defender and sent a centering pass to senior forward Jay Sylvia, who snapped his second goal of the season to the top-right corner.

The Penmen would strike twice more in the second stanza to push the lead to 3-0. First, SNHU was able to find a soft spot in the Ravens' penalty-kill defense to put home a power-play goal at the 2:22 mark. Collins had the puck in the left circle and found a seam to slip a pass to junior forward Timothy Baylis in the high slot. The latter quickly put a shot to the top-right corner, beating junior goaltender Tom McGuckin (Clayton, N.J.) over the glove hand for his first goal of the campaign, which would ultimately stand as the game-winner. Junior forward Chris Moquin provided an assist on the play as well.

SNHU added another at the 16:04 mark, on Goudreau's first collegiate score. Collins had the puck in the right-wing corner and was able to slip a pass across the crease to Goudreau, who had eluded the Franklin Pierce defense on the back door. It was an easy finish for Goudreau at the left post to make it 3-0. Baylis picked up his first of two assists on the night on the play as well.

Franklin Pierce cut the gap to 3-1 just 34 seconds into the third stanza. Indelicato was able to slip the puck inside the right post amid a scramble for the puck at the right-wing side of the net. Freshman forwards Alex Lester (Methuen, Mass.) and Kyle Gosselin (Haverhill, Mass.) got sticks to the puck on the play as well, to pick up assists.

SNHU would later cap the night's scoring at the 13:08 mark, creating the 4-1 final, as the Ravens turned the puck over while trying to break out of their own end. Collins collected the puck off the turnover and quickly moved it to Goudreau, who was cutting into the high slot from the middle of the blue line. Goudreau started a give-and-go play by shipping the puck to Baylis in the right-wing circle. Baylis immediately sent it back to Goudreau, who had glided between the hash marks since passing the puck. All the movement left McGuckin without a chance on the play, as Goudreau buried his one-time shot in the top-left corner for his second goal of the game.

McGuckin (1-2-0) finished with 29 saves against 33 shots and took the loss between the pipes for Franklin Pierce. Junior netminder Ryan Slatky (2-0-0) stopped 37 of 38 shots at the other end to pick up the win in the crease for SNHU.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Nov. 5, when they travel to Worcester State for a non-conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Hart Recreation Center in Worcester, Mass.
