Men’s Ice Hockey Stymied in Season Finale by Suffolk, 1-0

Men’s Ice Hockey Stymied in Season Finale by Suffolk, 1-0

WINCHENDON, Mass. (February 14, 2017) – A quick strike 57 seconds into the second period stood as the only goal of the game on Tuesday night, as the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team fell to Suffolk, 1-0, in its season finale at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. Freshman forward David Lappin scored the lone goal with a power move from the right circle to lift the Rams to the non-conference win.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce concludes its season at 9-15-1, matching the program record for wins, which was originally set in 2012-13 (9-13-3). With the win, Suffolk improves to 7-11-4.

After a scoreless first period and a first intermission which was extended due to issues while resurfacing the ice, Suffolk struck for the only score of the night less than a minute into the middle frame. Lappin had the initial shot on the play from high in the right circle. His attempt was blocked by the defense and, after a battle for possession in the right circle, the puck wound up back on his stick. Lappin made a power move around a defender and cut out in front of the crease, putting his shot inside the left post to score his third goal of the season. Freshman forwards Austin Lackey and Brian Brooks provided the assists at the 57-second mark.

Franklin Pierce was able to force the issue in the third period, to the tune of a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal, but could not solve Suffolk junior goaltender Kevin Venturoso. The Ravens got a late power play at the 17:13 mark, and pulled senior netminder Austin Christopher (Winthrop, Maine) for an extra attacker for the final 97 seconds, but could not break through, as Suffolk skated away with the 1-0 win.

Christopher (1-2-0) finished with 21 saves against 22 shots on goal and suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce. Venturoso (4-6-1) stopped all 23 shots he faced to pick up the win for Suffolk, as well as the third shutout of his career.
