Men’s Ice Hockey Falls Behind in Second Period, Downed at Framingham State, 4-1

Gargin nets lone goal

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (November 4, 2015) – The Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team surrendered two goals in the second period and two more in the third on Wednesday night, as part of a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Framingham State at Loring Arena. Freshman forward Jake McKinnon and junior defenseman Vaughn Guetens had a goal and an assist each in the non-conference game for Framingham State, while freshman forward Sean Gargin (Staten Island, N.Y.) netted the lone goal for Franklin Pierce.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 0-3-0, while Framingham State opens its season at 1-0-0.

After the first period went scoreless, Franklin Pierce opened the scoring on Wednesday with a power-play marker at the 7:15 mark of the second period. Gargin put home his first collegiate goal, off an assist from junior forward Connor Mauro (Shrewsbury, Mass.).

The lead was short-lived, as Framingham State had the answer just 30 seconds later, at the 7:45 mark. Sophomore forward Tyler Colacchio notched the first goal of the season for the Rams, while McKinnon and Guetens provided the helpers.

Framingham State put home a power-play goal of its own just over two minutes later to push the lead to 2-1, where it would remain through the rest of the middle stanza. Guetens made it a two-point night with his first goal of the season, off an assist from freshman defenseman Hayden Lyle, who notched his first collegiate point.

The second half of the second period, as well as the first half of the third period, went without further scoring, before Framingham State tacked on an insurance marker at the 10:21 mark of the third frame, on the power play. McKinnon made it a two-point night for him as well, finishing off an assist from sophomore forward Keith Barnaby.

The Rams added an empty-netter for good measure, at 19:02, to create the 4-1 final. Junior forward Mark Essery put his first of the season into the vacated goal, off an assist from senior forward Melvin Nichols.

Senior goaltender Kyle Moran (Marshfield, Mass.) piled up 39 saves against 42 shots on goal while being stuck with the loss (0-1-0) for Franklin Pierce. Junior Alessio Muggli (1-0-0) stopped 34 of 35 shots at the other end of the ice for Framingham State.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Nov. 7, when they return home to host Southern New Hampshire in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon, Mass.
