Late Goal Allows Men’s Ice Hockey to Forge 3-3 Tie with SNHU

Haun notches 2-1-3

WINCHENDON, Mass. (February 6, 2016) – In a seesaw affair on Saturday night, the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team led 2-0, trailed 3-2 and ultimately played to a 3-3 tie with Southern New Hampshire in a Northeast-10 Conference contest at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. With the goaltender pulled for the extra attacker, it was sophomore forward Blake Manginell (Troy, Mich.) who scored the game-tying goal with 56 seconds to play in regulation.

With the tie, Franklin Pierce moves to 3-15-3 (0-5-3 Northeast-10), while Southern New Hampshire now stands at 6-13-4 (3-3-4 Northeast-10). SNHU claimed two Northeast-10 standings points with the tie, by virtue of winning the season series between the two clubs, 1-0-2.

Franklin Pierce sophomore forward Jonathan Haun (Buffalo, N.Y.) opened his three-point night (2-1-3) with the first period's only goal. Sophomore forward Brad Riccardi (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and junior forward Connor Mauro (Shrewsbury, Mass.) provided the assists on Haun's seventh of the season at the 16:48 mark.

Haun would strike again at the 8:32 mark of the second period, after Riccardi's initial shot on the play was saved by SNHU sophomore goaltender Ryan Slatky. The rebound came off of Slatky's pads and towards the right-with corner, where Haun was the first man on the scene. He quickly threw the puck on net and into the goal before Slatky could scramble back to his feet. Junior defenseman Taylor Fletcher (Leominster, Mass.) would pick up an assist on the play as well.

SNHU was able to halve the deficit before the second intermission, cutting the gap to 2-1 at the 14:55 mark. Sophomore forward Chris Moquin had the finish out front for his second goal of the campaign, while junior forward Jay Sylvia and sophomore defenseman Sean McTiernan picked up the assists.

The Penmen drew level just 36 seconds into the third period. McTiernan had another assist, as he set up senior forward Jim Gabrione for a quick finish in the slot, for the latter's eighth of the season.

With 4:12 to play, at the 15:48 mark, SNHU would claim a 3-2 lead on a nice move in the offensive end by sophomore forward Kevin Lorcher. Using the offensive-zone traffic to his advantage, Lorcher cut into the high slot and took a shot through a pair of screens, which cleanly beat Franklin Pierce sophomore goaltender Tom McGuckin (Clayton, N.J.). Sophomore forwards Griffin Rogers and Kyle Valliere had the assists on Lorcher's third of the season.

Franklin Pierce took its timeout prior to an offensive-zone faceoff with 1:10 to play, during which the Ravens pulled McGuckin in favor of the extra attacker. The gambit paid off just 14 seconds later, at the 19:04 mark. Haun's original shot on the play from the right side was padded aside by SNHU sophomore netminder Ryan Slatky. The rebound came all the way to the left point, where senior forward Michael Marchionda (Hyde Park, Mass.) stepped into a slap shot. Manginell was able to redirect the puck en route, and the deflection was enough to beat Slatky and tie the game on Manginell's second of the season.

The Manginell goal would stand as the game's final tally, as neither side could find the game-winner in overtime.

McGuckin (2-7-3) finished with 25 saves against 28 shots in the crease for Franklin Pierce. Slatky piled up 39 saves against 42 shots between the pipes for SNHU.

The Ravens return to the ice on Tuesday, Feb. 9, when they remain home to host Daniel Webster in a non-conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
