Men’s Ice Hockey Clipped at Stonehill, 3-2, on Early Third-Period Goal

FOXBORO, Mass. (February 2, 2016) – Senior forward Brendan Glynn (Quincy, Mass.) scored twice on Tuesday night, but it was not enough for the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team, which suffered a 3-2 defeat at Stonehill in Northeast-10 Conference play at Foxboro Sports Center. Senior forward Willy Baker scored the game-winning goal for Stonehill, as he broke a 2-2 tie at the 2:32 mark of the second period.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-15-2 (0-5-2 Northeast-10), while Stonehill improves to 10-8-4 (6-0-2 Northeast-10). Stonehill now leads the three-game series between the two teams, 1-0-1. Franklin Pierce will need to win the series finale at home on Feb. 16 to force a split of the two standings points at stake in the series.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring on Tuesday night with the first period's only goal. Working on a power play late in the stanza, the Ravens worked the puck around the perimeter, from senior defenseman Dan Gibbons (Quincy, Mass.) to senior forward Michael Marchionda (Hyde Park, Mass.) to Glynn in the right circle. Glynn threw the puck towards the crease, apparently searching for a deflection from his teammate cutting across the goalmouth. Glynn got the deflection he was looking for, just not from his teammate, as the puck was redirected by the Stonehill defense and into the net for Glynn's fifth goal of the season, at the 19:10 mark of the period.

Stonehill struck twice in a span of 36 seconds early in the second period to surge to a 2-1 lead. The first goal came at the 4:46 mark, immediately off a faceoff in the right-wing circle. The Skyhawks threw the puck on net quickly off the draw, with Franklin Pierce sophomore goaltender Tom McGuckin (Clayton, N.J.) making the initial save on the play. However, Stonehill senior forward Kevin Airoldi was on the scene at the left post to jam home the rebound for his first goal of the year, while freshman defenseman Connor Collier was credited with an assist.

At the 5:22 mark, Airoldi would pick up an assist as well, as he was able to spring junior forward Evan Jacques into the zone on an odd-man rush. Jacques took the shot himself from the left-wing circle and wedged a laser of a wrist shot just inside the top-right corner of the net, beating McGuckin to the far side for his third goal of the campaign.

Franklin Pierce found the answer to tie the game at 2-2 less than three minutes after the Jacques goal. The play devolved into a scramble in front of the goal, with junior forward Connor Mauro (Shrewsbury, Mass.) able to find a way to get his stick to the puck from in front of the right post. Mauro's effort caused the puck to squirt free at the left post, and left Stonehill freshman goaltender William Palmer with no idea where the puck was. Glynn found it first and jammed home his second of the night at the 8:14 mark, with sophomore forward Brad Riccardi (Scarsdale, N.Y.) chipping in an assist on the play as well.

The eventual game-winning goal, the only goal of the third period, came just 2:32 into the final stanza. Junior forward Brian Higgins led an odd-man rush into the offensive end down the left side. Higgins was able to draw the defense towards him in the left-wing circle and slip a centering pass to Baker, who was now unmarked cutting into the slot. The pass led Baker perfectly, and he was left with an easy one-time finish for his fourth goal of the season.

McGuckin (2-7-2) finished with 35 saves against 38 shots on goal in the crease for Franklin Pierce. At the other end of the ice, Palmer (9-4-3) made 19 saves against 21 shots between the pipes for Stonehill.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Feb. 6, when they return home to host Southern New Hampshire in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon.
