Mid-Game Comeback Ultimately Not Enough, as Men’s Ice Hockey Falls at Nazareth, 4-2

Manginell dishes out two assists

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (January 15, 2016) – Senior forward Paddy Murphy (York, Maine) and sophomore forward David Wilcox (Stillwater, Maine) scored 2:17 apart in the second period on Friday night, as the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team erased a 2-0 deficit. However, Nazareth reclaimed the lead later in the frame on the way to a 4-2 win in non-conference play at Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 2-12-0, while Nazareth improves to 5-6-4.

Nazareth opened the scoring with a flourish in the first period, striking for two goals just 21 seconds apart. Sophomore defenseman Ryan Walter struck first, with his second of the season at the 9:34 mark, off of assists from freshman forward Alex Corvi and senior forward Rocky Gruttadauria. Senior forward Packy Jones followed with his third of the campaign at 9:55, while freshman defenseman Jacob Paluch provided the assist.

The remainder of the first period went without further scoring, but the Ravens answered with a pair of their own goals before the midpoint of the second stanza. First, at the 7:36 mark, Murphy put home his second of the season, off of an assist from sophomore forward Blake Manginell (Troy, Mich.). Later, at the 9:53 mark, Manginell had the helper again, as Wilcox netted his third goal of the year.

Nazareth would reclaim the lead, this time for good, at the 17:21 mark of the middle frame. With the Golden Flyers on the power play, sophomore forward John Power put home his fifth of the season, and the eventual game-winner, unassisted.

Nazareth, which posted a 41-21 advantage in shots on goal on Friday night, tacked on an empty-net insurance marker at the 19:55 mark of the third period, as the game wound towards its conclusion. Senior forward Scott Andler salted away his third goal of the season, with Gruttadauria notching his second assist of the night.

Sophomore goaltender Étienne Roy (Saint-Henri Quebec) chalked up 37 saves, but still took the loss (0-3-0) between the pipes for the Ravens. At the other end of the ice, senior Jordan Demo (1-0-0) made 19 saves to pick up the win in his first collegiate start.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 16, when they travel to SUNY Geneseo for a non-conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m. at Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena in Geneseo, N.Y.
