Batis, Cornele Rally Men’s Ice Hockey to 2-2 Tie in Weekend Opener at SUNY Canton

Moran collects 42 saves

Moran Moran matched his career high with 42 saves on Friday night at SUNY Canton.

CANTON, N.Y. (February 14, 2014) – Senior defenseman Tyler Cornele (Cape Coral, Fla.) scored the game-tying goal at 12:58 of the second period on Friday night, as the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team erased a 2-0 deficit to skate to a 2-2 tie against SUNY Canton in non-conference play at Roos House. Sophomore forward Jordan Grimsley and freshman forward Nick Vasilopoulos scored in the first period for SUNY Canton.

With the tie, Franklin Pierce moves to 4-15-3 (2-7-1 Northeast-10), while SUNY Canton now stands at 5-14-3. The two teams will meet again on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Roos House to wrap up the two-game weekend series.

Canton opened the scoring at the 6:43 mark of the first period, as sophomore forward Joe Casale sent the puck to Grimsley outside the left-wing circle. Grimsley snapped a shot past Franklin Pierce sophomore goaltender Kyle Moran (Marshfield, Mass.) on the stick side for his first collegiate goal.

After killing off a pair of penalties, the Kangaroos extended the lead to 2-0 with just 11 seconds to play in the opening stanza. The team's leading scorer, senior defenseman Cory Giczewski circled behind the net and moved into some space on the right-wing side. When he had a lane, he slipped a pass across the slot to Vasilopoulos, who banged home his fifth goal of the campaign at 19:49.

Canton would have four power-play chances in the second period, but all four would go by the boards and Franklin Pierce would score the period's only two goals to tie the game at 2-2. The first came just 2:07 into the period, as senior forward Bryan Colella (Medfield, Mass.) sent the puck to sophomore forward Matt Batis (Lakewood, N.Y.), who beat Canton junior goaltender Morgan Barr over the shoulder for his third goal of the season.

Amid the four power-play chances, Canton had an extended two-man advantage shortly after the Batis goal, but the Ravens were able to stymie the power-play unit. Cornele would then strike for the equalizer at the 12:58 mark, as he beat Barr on the stick side for his seventh goal of the season, tying for the team lead. Freshman defenseman Shane Dowd (Holden, Mass.) and sophomore forward Brendan Glynn (Quincy, Mass.) provided the assists on the play.

From there, things quieted down, as neither team scored in the third period or in overtime and the two teams combined for just two penalties the rest of the way. Canton forced the issue in the third period, to the tune of a 15-4 advantage in shots, but Moran sent them all aside to preserve the tie.

In all, Moran finished with 42 saves to match his career high on the way to the tie (2-3-2). At the other end, Barr made 28 stops in the draw (2-6-3).
