Men’s Ice Hockey Downed at Saint Michael’s, 4-1

Ravens visit Stonehill Thursday

Glynn Glynn had his fifth goal of the season on Tuesday night at Saint Michael's.

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (February 4, 2014) – Sophomore forward Brendan Glynn (Quincy, Mass.) scored a third-period goal on Tuesday night, but it was not enough to erase a 4-0 deficit for the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team, which dropped a 4-1 decision to Saint Michael's in Northeast-10 Conference play at Cairns Arena. Freshman defenseman Danny Divis had a goal and two assists to post a three-point night in the win for Saint Michael's.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 4-14-2 (2-6-1 Northeast-10), while Saint Michael's improves to 5-15-1 (2-3-0 Northeast-10). The game effectively served as a play-in contest for the upcoming Northeast-10 Championship, as Saint Michael's clinched its berth with the victory, while Franklin Pierce was eliminated from postseason contention.

Saint Michael's struck for the first period's only goal, at the 13:51 mark, to take a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the night. At work on the power play, freshman defenseman Stephen Inman took the original shot from the left point, but was turned aside by Franklin Pierce senior goaltender Dave O'Brien (Groton, Mass.). Unfortunately for the Ravens, the rebound fell straight to junior forward William Cote outside the crease. Cote passed on a shot opportunity and instead laid the puck off to the right side for freshman forward Josh Dickman, who finished off his eighth goal of the campaign.

The Purple Knights struck twice more late in the second period to take a 3-0 lead heading into the second intermission. First, junior forward Jeremy Wong took the puck on a jaunt behind the net, cut to the left-wing circle and sent a pass into the slot. Sophomore forward Kevin Altidor was waiting there for the one-timer. O'Brien got a piece of the shot, but not enough to keep it out of the net. Divis also picked up an assist on Altidor's team-leading 12th of the season at 14:06, which ultimately served as the game-winning goal.

Another power-play strike would push the lead to three goals 3:37 after the Altidor score. With the Purple Knights enjoying a two-man advantage, Wong and Divis set up Inman for a slap shot, and this one found the net for his third goal of the year.

Divis would cap his three-point night with a goal at the 4:44 mark of the third period to push the lead as high as 4-0. His sixth of the season came as he picked the top corner from the left-wing circle off helpers from sophomore forward Nick Potter and freshman forward Justin McKenzie.

Franklin Pierce scored its lone goal at the 12:23 mark to create the 4-1 final. Senior forward Bryan Colella (Medfield, Mass.) took the initial shot on the play, but was turned aside by Saint Michael's junior goaltender Dave Donzanti. The rebound came to the left-wing side of the net, where Glynn finished over the netminder from a sharp angle for his fifth goal of the season.

O'Brien finished with 31 saves on the night, but suffered the loss (2-11-1) in net for Franklin Pierce. Donzanti collected 23 saves at the other end of the ice to pick up the win (4-10-1) between the pipes for Saint Michael's.

The Ravens return to the ice on Thursday, Feb. 6, when they travel to Stonehill for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Foxboro Sports Center in Foxboro, Mass. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Wednesday, Feb. 19, against Southern New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
