Four Goals in Final 27 Minutes Power Men’s Ice Hockey Over Suffolk, 4-3

Sullivan (2-0-2), Blaker (1-1-2), Cornele (0-2-2) notch two points each

Sullivan Sullivan has five points in the Ravens' last three games after a two-goal outing at Suffolk on Saturday.

BOSTON, Mass. (January 18, 2014) – Junior forward Tim Sullivan (Rye, N.H.) scored once in the second period and once in the third period on Saturday afternoon, to record his first career multiple-goal game and lead the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team to a 4-3 win over Suffolk in non-conference play at Steriti Rink. Sophomore defenseman Steve Colomey had a goal and an assist in the loss for Suffolk.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 3-11-1 (1-3-1 Northeast-10), while Suffolk falls to 5-9-1 (2-2-1 ECAC Northeast). Franklin Pierce's four goals came in a span of just 20:16, the team's biggest offensive outburst of the season thus far.

Suffolk opened the scoring with a power-play goal with just six seconds to play in the first period, but it would mark the only time the Rams held the lead on the night. Colomey finished off his second of the season at the 19:54 mark, off assists from junior forward Tim Sprague and sophomore forward Carmen Mastrangelo.

Franklin Pierce erased the lead and tied the game at 1-1 after the midway point of the middle stanza. At the 13:47 mark, Sullivan found his fifth of the season, while junior defenseman Brendan FitzPatrick (Winthrop, Mass.) and freshman forward Aaron Blaker (Rolling Meadows, Ill.) provided the assists. Blaker would pick up a goal of his own, his second of the year, just 3:03 later, at 16:50. Freshman forward Brett Oldaker (Canonsburg, Pa.) and senior forward Tyler Cornele (Cape Coral, Fla.) had helpers as the Ravens took a 2-1 lead. Blaker, who played eight games in the season's first half without recording a point, now has four points (2-2-4) in five games coming out of the semester break.

Suffolk scored another goal in the final minute of a period in the second, as the Rams knotted the game at 2-2 just 35 seconds prior to the intermission. Freshman forward Stanton Turner netted his fourth of the campaign, with Mastrangelo and Colomey adding assists at 19:25.

Suffolk killed off a penalty early in the third period, but Franklin Pierce took the lead for good just 30 seconds after the man-advantage expired, at the 5:36 mark. Sullivan put away his second of the night, while freshman defenseman Shane Dowd (Holden, Mass.) and senior defenseman Roman Malyshev (Moscow, Russia) provided assists. For Sullivan, the two-goal game extended his scoring streak to three games (3-2-5). For Dowd, the assist marked his first collegiate point.

The Ravens got what would prove to be an important insurance goal, as well as the eventual game-winning goal, at 14:03. Senior forward Ted Walsh (Quincy, Mass.) did the honors, scoring his first career game-winning goal, as well as his fifth goal of the year, off assists from senior forward Sean Dunn (Quincy, Mass.) and Cornele. For Cornele, who leads the team in scoring (6-4-10), it was his third multiple-point outing of the season.

Suffolk pulled the goaltender for an extra attacker to try to make up the two-goal deficit in the final minute, and the tactic would allow them to pull within one and create the 4-3 final. Freshman forward Simon Leahy notched his team-leading seventh of the season, off assists from Sprague and senior forward Charlie McGinnis at 19:40, as the Rams scored in the final minute of all three periods. The Sprague goal would be their final marker however, as the Ravens skated away with the victory.

Sophomore goaltender Kyle Moran (Marshfield, Mass.) made his first start since Nov. 30 in net for Franklin Pierce and came away with 25 saves to pick up the win (2-3-0). Meanwhile, freshman Kevin Venturoso stopped 26 shots and took the loss (1-1-0) in net for Suffolk.

The Ravens return to the ice on Tuesday, Jan. 21, when they travel to Southern New Hampshire for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The Ice Den in Hooksett, N.H. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Saturday, Feb. 1 against Stonehill at 8 p.m.
