PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (December 8, 2012) – A 4-for-8 night on the power play and a pair of third-period goals on Saturday night sent the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team to a 5-5 tie at Salve Regina in non-conference play at Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink. In a game dominated by special teams, the two teams combined for seven power-play goals and a shorthanded tally.

With the tie, Franklin Pierce sits at 4-4-1 (2-1-0 Northeast-10), while Salve Regina moves to 4-7-1 (2-3-0 ECAC Northeast).

Trailing 5-3 coming out of the second intermission, the Ravens scored the only two goals of the third period to force overtime and eventually earn the tie. At the 3:52 mark, senior defenseman Wes Russell (Marlboro, Mass.) put away the fourth power-play goal of the night for Franklin Pierce, his second goal of the season. Junior forward Ted Walsh (Quincy, Mass.) dished out the lone assist, his second of the night. The Ravens would tie the game at the 12:20 mark while shorthanded. Senior forward Michael Carr (South Boston, Mass.) scored his third goal in as many games and his second shorthanded tally in the last three games. Senior forward Roscoe Sweeney (Falmouth, Mass.) picked up the assist on Carr's fourth of the season, which would stand as the game-tying goal.

Earlier in the game, the Ravens opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 7:08 mark of the first period. Senior forward Dino Federico (Canton, Mass.) netted his first goal of the season, which marked his first point of the season as well, while Walsh picked up the lone assist.

Salve Regina would storm back with the next four goals over the final 6:39 of the period to take a 4-1 lead into the first intermission. At 13:21, junior defenseman Chad Hollenshade scored his first goal of the season, off assists from junior forward Chase Davis and sophomore forward John Scorcia.

From there, the Seahawks put home back-to-back-to-back power-play goals, converting on each of their three chances in the final six minutes of the stanza. Freshman forward Marc Biggs made it 2-1 on a 5-on-3 at 15:07 with his team-leading ninth goal of the campaign, as freshman defenseman Lucas Sousa picked up the assist. Scorcia and freshman forward Cameron Gaudet set up Sousa's first of the year 1:46 later to make it 3-1. Another 28 seconds after the Sousa goal, Hollenshade and Davis each picked up their second point of the night by assisting on sophomore forward Michael Naso's fourth goal of the season.

Franklin Pierce stopped the bleeding 4:52 into the second period with their second power-play goal of the evening to cut the lead to 4-2, this one coming during a two-man advantage. Freshman forward Matt Batis (Lakewood, N.Y.) took a feed from freshman forward Brendan Glynn (Quincy, Mass.) and put away his second goal of the season.

Salve Regina reclaimed the three-goal lead at 11:22 of the second, on the first of the season from junior forward Kenny Craig. Freshman defenseman Alex Barr added the assist. Franklin Pierce answered with 2:17 to play in the middle stanza, to cut the lead back to two at 5-3. Freshman forward Paddy Murphy (York, Maine) scored the third power-play goal of the night for the Ravens, his second goal of the year, off assists from Batis and sophomore defenseman Brendan Fitzpatrick (Winthrop, Mass.). The remainder of the second period would go without another goal, setting up Franklin Pierce's third-period rally.

Freshman goaltender Kyle Moran (Marshfield, Mass.) made his first career start in net for Franklin Pierce and made 10 saves against 14 shots before being pulled in favor of senior Pat Dunn (Quincy, Mass.) after the fourth Salve Regina goal. Dunn made 30 stops against 31 shots over the remaining 47:38 of the game and was credited with the tie (2-3-1). Freshman David Chiokadze stopped 25 shots and received the tie (2-4-1) between the pipes for Salve Regina.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 5, when they return home to face Framingham State in a non-conference contest. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon.
