Three-Goal Third Sinks Men’s Ice Hockey at Assumption, 4-3

Ravens/Greyhounds season series to be settled Wednesday

Sweeney Sweeney picked up two points at Assumption on Saturday afternoon, giving him 81 for his career, just five off the program record.

WORCESTER, Mass. (January 26, 2013) – Freshman forward Brendan Glynn (Quincy, Mass.), senior forward Roscoe Sweeney (Falmouth, Mass.) and senior defenseman Brendan McCarron (Andover, Mass.) built a 3-1 lead in the second period for the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team on the road on Saturday afternoon. However, their work would be undone in the third, as Assumption scored three unanswered in the final stanza to rally for a 4-3 victory in Northeast-10 Conference play at Buffone Arena. Junior forward Ross White had a hat trick in the win for Assumption.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 4-10-2 (2-4-0 Northeast-10), while Assumption improves to 5-14-1 (2-5-1 Northeast-10). The two teams have now split the first two games of the three-game season series, with each squad winning on home ice. As a result, the two points in the Northeast-10 standings for winning the series will be up for grabs in the series finale, which is also the back end of a home-and-home series, at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon.

The first period went without a goal on Saturday afternoon, before the Ravens jumped out to a 3-1 lead in what would become a penalty-marred second stanza. Glynn opened the scoring 2:05 into the frame with his third goal of the season, off assists from senior forward Dino Federico (Canton, Mass.) and freshman forward Doug Usseglio (Waltham, Mass.). Just 2:02 later, Sweeney doubled the lead to 2-0 with his fourth of the season, unassisted.

Assumption got the all-important next goal, just 1:44 after the Sweeney tally, when White found the net for the first of his trio. Senior forward Keven Meehan had the lone helper on White's team-leading sixth of the season. Assumption took a penalty less than a minute after the White goal and McCarron converted for Franklin Pierce with his sixth of the season, as well as his fifth power-play goal of the year. Sweeney and graduate student forward Anthony Chighisola (Whitman, Mass.) had the assists as the Ravens reclaimed a two-goal lead at 7:22.

From there, the two teams proved to be more interested in fouling each other than continuing the scoring, as they combined for eight minor penalties over the final 8:18 of the middle period, and the game remained 3-1 heading into the second intermission. Assumption wasted no time firing up the comeback after the break, drawing an interference penalty on McCarron just 57 seconds into the third. White cashed in on the man advantage, while junior forwards Kyle Zobler and Mike Heyde picked up the assists 75 seconds into the period.

White completed his hat trick, which was the first multiple-goal game of his career, at 11:32, with another power-play marker. Heyde and Meehan contributed assists as the Greyhounds drew even at 3-3. With time winding down, Assumption would cap the comeback with just 1:05 to play in regulation, as sophomore forward Trevor Plante found the net for his fifth goal of the campaign. Heyde had his third assist of the period, while White added the other helper for his fourth point of the afternoon.

Senior goaltender Pat Dunn (Quincy, Mass.) was credited with a career-best 47 saves in net for Franklin Pierce, though he was saddled with the loss (2-6-1). Junior Bobby Bowden was listed with 42 saves while picking up the win (4-11-0) between the pipes for Assumption.
