O'Brien makes 37 saves

GENESEO, N.Y. (January 12, 2013) – Graduate student forward Anthony Chighisola (Whitman, Mass.) opened the scoring in the first period on Saturday afternoon, but four goals in the third period spelled a 4-1 loss for the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team to SUNY Geneseo in non-conference play at Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena. Sophomore defenseman Jack Caradonna and sophomore forward Justin Scharfe had a pair of assists each in the victory for Geneseo.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 4-7-2 (2-1-0 Northeast-10), while Geneseo improves to 10-5-1 (6-1-1 SUNYAC). Geneseo kept the pressure up offensively all day long, as it amassed a 41-18 advantage in shots on goal.

The Ravens struck first on Saturday, 7:20 into the contest, when Chighisola netted his fifth of the season, unassisted, to tie for the team lead.

The remainder of the first period and the entirety of the second would go without another goal, before Geneseo struck four times in the final stanza to skate away with the 4-1 victory. The Knights tied things at 1-1 just 65 seconds into the frame, on the second of the season for senior forward Kaz Iwamoto, off assists from Scharfe and junior forward Garry Childerhose.

Just 25 seconds after the Iwamoto goal, Franklin Pierce got itself into penalty trouble. Freshman forward Paddy Murphy (York, Maine) was whistled for charging, and a bench minor at the same time put Geneseo on the two-man advantage. It took the Knights just 11 seconds to capitalize, as junior forward Zachary Vit notched his fifth of the campaign, the eventual game-winner, off assists from Caradonna and sophomore forward Tyler Brickler.

Two goals after the midway point of the period served as insurance markers for Geneseo. At 12:10, freshman defenseman Nate Brown converted on the power play for his third of the season, while Scharfe and freshman defenseman Alex Lubczuk provided the helpers. At 16:17, freshman forward Ryan Donnelly's third of the campaign capped the scoring, off assists from Caradonna and senior forward Nick Ryan.

Junior goaltender Dave O'Brien (Groton, Mass.) piled up 37 saves, but suffered the loss (2-2-1) between the pipes for Franklin Pierce. Freshman Nick Horrigan stopped 17 pucks to pick up the win (2-1-0) in net for Geneseo.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 19, when they return home to host Stonehill in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
