Men’s Golf Fourth at Midway Point of FPU Invitational

TOWNSEND, Mass. (September 18, 2022) -- Senior Michael Sosik (Fiskdale, Mass.) and sophomore Peter Wurszt (Wilbraham, Mass.) are both narrowly inside the top 10 of an 84-golfer field, as they led the way for the Franklin Pierce University men's golf team on Sunday afternoon, at the first day of the Franklin Pierce Invitational. Both carded three-over rounds of 73 at the par-70, 6184-yard Northern Spy Golf Club, to feature as part of an eight-way tie for 10th place. As a team, the Ravens turned in an opening 298 (+18), and are fourth in the 16-team tournament with one round still to play.

A pair of 67s (-3) sit at the top of the leaderboard at the midpoint, as Dominican (N.Y.) junior Alejandro Gomez Cervantes and Felician freshman Pablo Hidalgo lead the way. Assumption junior Sean Magarian and Southern New Hampshire sophomore Jack Pepin are tied-third, two shots back, at 69 (-1). Sunday's scoring average was nearly 10 shots over par, at 79.75.

Meanwhile, the Ravens put all four of their counting scores inside the top 30, and all of their five-player lineup in the top half of the field through the first round. Behind Sosik and Wurszt, freshman Seth Saffell (Castro Valley, Calif.) and junior Thomas Hickey (Moultonborough, N.H.) both turned in six-over rounds of 76, and are part of a three-way tie for 28th. Junior Jake Berkio (Ashburnham, Mass.) rounded out the lineup and is tied-37th at 79 (+9).

It all added up to 298 shots (+18) for Franklin Pierce on Sunday, which was good for fourth place for now, though the team is just four shots in back of second-place Assumption at 294 (+14) and also only one shot ahead of a three-way tie for fifth at 299 (+19). SNHU leads by eight shots at 286 (+6), while the next seven teams are separated by just five shots, setting up a crowded top half of the leaderboard heading into play on Monday.

Franklin Pierce also had four individuals in action on Sunday. Freshman Riley Richards (East Montpelier, Vt.) is tied-48th at 80 (+10), senior Jack Hogan (Westfield, Mass.) is tied-50th at 81 (+11), sophomore Jack Paterson (Franklin, Mass.) is tied-67th at 85 (+15), and sophomore Vetchayung Khumnirdpayak (Pathum Thani, Thailand) is tied-76th at 89 (+19).

The Franklin Pierce Invitational wraps up on Monday, with the second and final round at Northern Spy.
