Late push sends Men’s Basketball home with victory over Dominican, 80-74

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (January 3, 2016) – The Franklin Pierce University Ravens Men's Basketball team used a late 11-0 run with under seven minutes to go to push themselves over the top, as they were able to shut the door and take victory over the host, Dominican College Chargers by a final score of 80-74 on Sunday afternoon in the final game at the 10th Annual James Clancy Memorial Tournament.

With the win, the Ravens improve to 7-5 on the season, while Dominican falls to double-digits in the loss column at 4-10 overall.

For a majority of the first half, the Chargers were the ones in control of the game having jumped to a lead early. An 8-2 run to begin the game got things going for Dominican, allowing them to hold the pace of play and maintain a suitable lead over the Ravens. The Chargers expanded up to a seven point lead with 4:42 to play in the first half, 26-19 after a good jumper from Will Wise.

Over the next two minutes, Franklin Pierce would reach down in their bag of tricks and pull out an 8-0 run that was provided by in part to two three-pointers from junior Matt Banton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) that gave Franklin Pierce their first lead of the ballgame with 2:27 to play in the first half. But a small charge at the end of the half by Dominican saw them grab back the lead heading into the locker room at the half up by three points, 33-30.

Dominican began the second half with a jumper from Sean O'Reilly before junior Marvilio Berroa (Bronx, N.Y.) knocked down a three-pointer in the ensuing possession. The team then traded buckets once again, with Travis Cook hitting a jumper for Dominican for a four point Charger lead.

But the Ravens used the combo of senior Tyler Iacuone (Mahopac, N.Y.) and sophomore Lolami Charles (Edgewood, Md.) to climb to a one point lead with 17:44 to play, after Iacuone hit a triple and Charles with a jumper.

From that point, both teams fought and clawed for an edge over the next 11 minutes, with the lead changing four times, and the score tying up nine times, and neither team gaining a lead more than three points.

With 6:58 to play, Franklin Pierce took control as Iacuone and sophomore Asante Sandiford (Boston, Mass.) combined for the 11-0 run, capped by a big three from Sandiford. The late push allowed the Ravens to open up the game, and were able to extend out to a nine point lead with under a minute to play and take the win, 80-74.

Junior Donte Gittens (Hartford, Conn.) and Banton each poured in a team-high 17 points on the evening, while also each collecting six rebounds. Gittens also dished out six assists, three blocks, and two steals, while Banton made his mark with 5-for-8 shooting from behind the arc. As a team, the Ravens shot 12-for-27 (44.4 percent) from behind the arc, while Dominican only went 2-for-12 (16.7 percent).

The Chargers were led by Kristopher Hargraves who collected 21 points and six rebounds on the game. Cook ended with 11 points, while Sayon Charles and Joe Clinton each chipped in with 10 points apiece.

The Ravens return to the court this Wednesday, January 6 when they face Adelphi at the Fieldhouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
