Iacuone puts home 22 points, leads Men’s Basketball to first victory of season, 83-73 over Chestnut Hill

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (November 15, 2015) – Senior Tyler Iacuone (Mahopac, N.Y.) displayed some veteran leadership on Sunday afternoon, as he put up a team-leading 22 points en route to leading the Franklin Pierce University Men's Basketball team to their first win of the season, 83-73, over Chestnut Hill College at Sorgenti Arena.

With the win, the Ravens improve to 1-1 (0-0 Northeast-10) on the season, while Chestnut Hill drops to 1-1 (0-0 CACC).

It took nearly two and a half minutes before the first points of the game were scored, as a jumper from sophomore Mike McDevitt (Cumberland, Maine) gave the Ravens an early 2-0 lead. Both teams would battle with the lead through the first 10 minutes of the half, with the lead changing four times and becoming tied twice.

Things would change at the 11:16 mark left in the first half, as three-point play topped by a free throw by Iacuone would give Franklin Pierce the one point advantage. That slight lead would be the only lead the Ravens would need for the remaining time, as they would not surrender it until the final buzzer.

The lead would extend out to 14 with five minutes to play in the first half, and would come to a 10 point Ravens lead at the halftime break. Franklin Pierce would keep it rolling in the second half, extending their lead out to 15 on multiple occasions, as junior Marvilio Berroa (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a three for that mark at 16:23, and two minutes later Iacuone would do the same at the 14:31 mark.

The crimson and grey kept pushing in the second half, ultimately topping off their biggest lead up at 20 at the 10:45 mark after a three-pointer from Matt Banton (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

A late push from Chestnut Hill in the final five minutes of the half would cut the lead to 10 before the final buzzer, even cutting the lead to eight points after a three from Luke Dickson with 1:04 to play. But strong free throw shooting down the stretch from the Ravens kept the lead manageable all the way until the clock ran to zeros.

Franklin Pierce would capitalize on the 34.7 percent shooting from the floor by Chestnut Hill, including only going 33.3 percent (7-21) from behind the three-point line. In contrast, the Ravens shot just slightly over 50 percent from the floor for the game, with approximately the same number from three-point land going 10-21 from distance.

The Ravens saving grace as well would be both teams' struggles from the free throw line, as Chestnut Hill went 53.3 percent (16-30) while the Ravens converted at 71.4 percent (15-21), providing a slight difference in the game.

Iacuone's hot hand led him to shooting 70 percent from the field (7-10) for the 22 points, followed by a strong effort from Banton with 13 points behind a 3-5 effort from behind the three-point line. Both Berroa and McDevitt each finished with 11 points on the game, while Berroa added in five rebounds, and a block and assist, while McDevitt provided seven boards and three blocks. Sophomore Donte Gittens (Hartford, Conn.) finished with nine points, four assists, and three blocks.

For Chestnut Hill, Dickson paced the way with 24 points with three assists, with Demetrius Issac adding in 15 points, and Ed McWade chipping in with 11. Noel Hightower was solid on the boards, pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds for Chestnut Hill.

The Ravens return to the court this Wednesday, November 18 when they play their home opener at the Fieldhouse, hosting the Saint Michael's College Purple Knights for their first conference matchup as well. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
