Tough second half drops Men’s Basketball against New Haven

RINDGE, N.H. (January 17, 2015) – Senior Ryen Vilmont (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored a team-high 15 points, but at the same token shot 6-22 and 1-13 from behind the arc as the Franklin Pierce University Ravens spoiled a first-half lead in a loss to the University of New Haven Chargers by a final score of 69-62 at the Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Ravens drop to 10-6 overall and 5-4 in the Northeast-10, while New Haven improves to 11-5 and 6-4 in conference play.

As a team, the Ravens only thought 38.5 percent from the field, as well as only shooting 26.5 percent from behind the arc. Franklin Pierce also managed to only get to the free throw line six times throughout the whole contest.

Franklin Pierce was able to grab an early lead to only have it flip-flop throughout the whole first half as both sides made it closely contested. The biggest lead the Ravens would touch would be a six point lead toward the end of the first half. That lead for Franklin Pierce would be at only three after Jemal Mosley dialed in from long range for New Haven with just over a minute to go in the first half.

The Ravens would come out cooler than the New Hampshire air, as the lead into halftime would be the final one on the day for Franklin Pierce. Just :30 into the second half came a three-pointer from Tommy Hunt to tie the game, and Hunt would tickle the twine once again 30 seconds later for a 30-27 lead for New Haven. From there, the Chargers wouldn't look back as the Ravens only came within four points at the smallest margin.

Vilmont's 15 would lead the Ravens in the scoring department, along with senior Paul Becklens (Boston, Mass.) who swooped in the action with 13 points. However, the performance of the day came from sophomore Donte Gittens (Hartford, Conn.) as he finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Mike McDevitt (Cumberland, Maine) would be the only other Raven in double-digits with 10 points.

For New Haven, they were led by a duo of 19 point scorers in Mosley and Jonny Ocasio, as combined they shot 15-28 from the floor. The Chargers also saw a double-double from their big man Eric Anderson, who finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Levy Gillespie would chip in with five assists.

The Ravens will return to the floor this upcoming Wednesday, January 21 when they take on the Pace Setters for a 7:30 tip-off.
