Becklens 25-point night not enough, Men’s Basketball falls to Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. (December 6, 2014) – Senior Paul Becklens (Boston, Mass.) went 11 for 18 from the floor on Saturday afternoon for a total of 25 points, but that strong effort was not enough as the Franklin Pierce University Ravens dropped their second consecutive game in-conference to the Saint Anselm College Hawks by a final of 91-88. Roy Mabrey dropped a game-high 27 points, including a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line for Saint Anselm.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce drops to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference, while Saint Anselm jumps to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Northeast-10.

The Ravens and Hawks fought for the lead back and forth through the first half, with Franklin Pierce taking the advantage into the locker room at halftime. The Ravens held that lead until about halfway through the second half, as Saint Anselm took control and didn't look back. Both teams traded buckets throughout the game, but Franklin Pierce could not gain the edge at the end of regulation.

Becklens had 13 by the end of the first half leading the way for the Ravens the rest of the way, accumulating five assists as well. Fellow senior Ryen Vilmont (Philadelphia, Pa.) also did not disappoint with 24 points going 5-6 from behind the three point line, while sophomore Donte Gittens (Hartford, Conn.) yielded his first double-double of the season with 11 points, 10 rebounds. The Ravens also got a breakout performance from freshman Dustin Cole (Standish, Maine) who scored a career-high 17 points on perfect 6-6 shooting, and 5-5 from 3-point land.

For Saint Anselm, Mabrey led with the 27 points on 8-17 shooting, while Victor Joshua also turned in a 20 point performance with four assists. Both Mike McCahey and Chris Santo turned in double-doubles with 16 points, as McCahey snatched 13 rebounds and Santo grabbing 10 rebounds.

Even with the win, Saint Anselm shot poorly on the game, as the shot 28 percent from behind the arc and 73 percent from the free throw line. Franklin Pierce had trouble controlling the ball with 19 turnovers, as Saint Anselm recorded 11 steals as well.
