Field Hockey Falls to Assumption, 2-1, in Home Finale

Dayna Kowesky

RINDGE, N.H. (November 7, 2018) – The Franklin Pierce University field hockey team closed out the home portion of its 2018 season on Tuesday afternoon. Senior forward Dayna Kowesky (Leominster, Mass.) opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, but Assumption answered with goals in the 44th and 48th minutes to come away as 2-1 winners in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 6-11 (3-9 NE10), while Assumption improves to 10-7 (6-6 NE10).

The entirety of the first half went without scoring on a wet afternoon in Rindge. Kowesky finally found the cage 7:21 into the second half, in the 43rd minute. Off of a corner, the Ravens sent the ball to senior midfielder Raegan Moulton (Baldwinville, Mass.) at the top of the circle. Moulton moved the ball to the left side for junior midfielder Allison Collins (Sandown, N.H.), who then found Kowesky in the left side of the circle. Kowesky was about six yards in front of the left post and quickly put her shot away from there, for her fifth goal of the season.

The lead was short lived however, as Assumption had the answering tally just 94 seconds later, in the 44th minute, also off of a corner. From the top of the circle, sophomore back Alexa Mulvihill sent the ball towards the right post. Her pass found sophomore forward Isabel Primack, who slotted away her fifth goal of the campaign to even the score.

The Greyhounds would waste no time moving out front either, as they need just another 3:52 to claim a 2-1 lead, which would stand as the final score. Sophomore forward Shannon Quinlan provided the centering pass from the right side, and fellow sophomore forward Jennifer Beardsley hammered the ball home at the left post for her 10th goal of the year.

Franklin Pierce would earn three penalty corners after Assumption took the lead, including a pair after time had expired, but could not put a shot on target to threaten to tie the game. Assumption finished with advantages of 11-4 in shot attempts, 8-1 in shots on goal and 8-4 in corners.

Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Barnes (Greenwich, N.Y.) finished with five saves against seven shots on goal and suffered the loss (6-11) in net for Franklin Pierce, while junior back Jessica Strassburg (Longmeadow, Mass.) added a defensive save along the way. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Bodzinski (10-7) did not make a save in the win for Assumption, as Franklin Pierce scored on its only shot on goal on the afternoon.

The Ravens will wrap up the season on Friday, Nov. 9, with a trip to Saint Anselm for an NE10 contest. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Grappone Stadium in Manchester, New Hampshire.
