Field Hockey Falls at No. 10 LIU Post, 5-1

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (October 19, 2018) – Two goals in the opening seven minutes got No. 10 nationally ranked LIU Post started on the right foot on Friday afternoon at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium. The Franklin Pierce University field hockey team cut the gap to 2-1 on a goal from senior forward Rachel Lapointe (Greenfield, Mass.), but the host Pioneers added another before halftime and two more in the second half to deal the Ravens a 5-1 defeat in Northeast-10 Conference play. Sophomore midfielder Sammy Bell had a hat trick in the win for LIU Post.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 6-6 (3-4 NE10), while LIU Post improves to 8-3 (7-2 NE10).

LIU Post took the lead for good with a pair of goals in the first seven minutes. Junior midfielder Taylor Brodsky started things off, as she banged home a rebound for her first goal of the season just 101 seconds into the proceedings. Bell followed up in the seventh minute, with the first of her three goals on the afternoon, as she put home a shot from the right side of the circle. Senior forward Emily Miller picked up the first of two assists on the afternoon, on Bell's seventh goal of the campaign.

Lapointe got the only goal of the afternoon for the Ravens in the 14th minute, to cut the deficit in half. She took a feed from junior midfielder Allison Collins (Sandown, N.H.) and put home a shot from the left side of the circle. It was Lapointe's fourth goal of the season, which tied her for the team lead.

Bell notched her second goal of the day in the 34th minute, just 67 seconds before halftime, to reclaim the two-goal lead for the Pioneers. The tally was unassisted, as Bell put home a rebound from the right side of the cage.

LIU Post tacked on a pair of second-half insurance markers to create the 5-1 final. In the 39th minute, senior forward Tarryn Morris picked the top-left corner of the net for her seventh goal of the year, unassisted. Bell capped off her hat trick in the 49th minute, while Miller picked up her second assist of the day.

Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Barnes (Greenwich, N.Y.) stopped four of nine shots on her goal and suffered the loss (6-6) for the Ravens. Sophomore Rachel Vellis (8-3) finished with eight saves against nine shots at the other end of the field to pick up the win for LIU Post.

Both teams had their chances throughout the day. LIU Post enjoyed a 15-11 advantage in shot attempts, while each side recorded nine shots on goal. Franklin Pierce held a 9-6 edge in penalty corners. The Ravens chalked up eight corner attempts in the second half, but came up empty on each.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 23, when they return home to host Bentley in an NE10 contest. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
