Field Hockey Blanks Saint Michael’s, 1-0

Allison Collins

RINDGE, N.H. (October 16, 2018) – The first collegiate goal from junior back Allison Collins (Sandown, N.H.) was all the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team needed on Wednesday night. The Granite State native struck on a corner attempt in the 45th minute at Sodexo Field, for the game's only goal, as the Ravens scored a 1-0 victory over visiting Saint Michael's in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 6-5 (3-3 NE10), while Saint Michael's falls to 1-9 (1-5 NE10).

The game was relatively sparse on scoring opportunities, as the two teams combined for 16 shots and seven shots on goal. Franklin Pierce posted a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal, but Saint Michael's held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. The Ravens earned six penalty corners, to five for Saint Michael's.

The first half's best scoring chance came from the stick of Franklin Pierce junior midfielder Jessica Greeley (Winslow, Maine). After taking control of the ball, she found some space to step into a shot at the top of the circle. The high-speed drive cleanly beat the goalkeeper, but whistled just wide of the left post.

The fourth of the six Franklin Pierce penalty corners would produce the game's only goal, in the 45th minute. Collins inserted the ball on the play, as the Ravens ran a play which saw the ball sent to senior midfielder Raegan Moulton (Baldwinville, Mass.) at the top of the circle. Collins then cut to the post as Moulton stepped into a drive from there. Now stationed just outside the left post, Collins was able to redirect the shot home for her first career goal.

Each team would put one shot on goal after the Collins goal, but no further scoring was to come.

Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Barnes (Greenwich, N.Y.) stopped all four shots she faced to notch her first collegiate shutout and pick up the win (6-5). Sophomore Hannah Wilmot (0-3) stopped two of three shots at the other end of the field and suffered the loss.

The Ravens return to the field on Friday, Oct. 19, when they travel to LIU Post for an NE10 contest. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium in Brookville, N.Y.
