Field Hockey Edged at Saint Michael’s, 1-0

COLCHESTER, Vt. (September 10, 2017) – In a game which featured little in the way of quality offensive chances on either side, Saint Michael's picked up the only goal, in the 30th minute on Sunday afternoon. The score, off the stick of sophomore forward Arianna Boscia, meant a 1-0 loss on the road for the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team, in non-conference play at Duffy Field.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 2-2, while Merrimack improves to 2-2. The two teams will meet for their annual Northeast-10 Conference contest on Wednesday, Oct. 4, in Rindge.

The contest on Sunday featured just nine shot attempts between the two teams, only three of which were on-target. Saint Michael's held a 2-1 edge in shots on goal, while Franklin Pierce notched a 5-4 advantage in shot attempts. The Ravens held a 6-2 edge in penalty corners, but left the Green Mountain State with nothing to show for it.

The game's only goal came off a defensive giveaway inside the circle in the 30th minute. The Ravens turned the ball over along the end line on the offensive right-wing side of the cage, near the edge of the circle. Ultimately, the Purple Knights were able to work the ball to Boscia, who was stationed approximately five yards outside the right post. Boscia turned and put a shot towards the net, though she didn't get all of it while being harried by a defender. Nonetheless, the ball slipped between the pads of senior goalkeeper Meaghan Williams (Salem, N.H.) and trickled across the goal line for Boscia's second goal of the season. In the immediate aftermath of the play, Williams was visibly agitated to have been beaten by the shot.

Williams (2-2) finished with one save against a pair of shots on goal in the loss for Franklin Pierce. Sophomore netminder Anna Hurley (2-2) needed to make only one save to post her second shutout of the season.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, Sept. 12, when they hold their home opener by hosting Bentley in a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
