Field Hockey Closes Season with 3-0 Loss at No. 6 LIU Post

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (October 28, 2016) – Three second-half goals were the difference on Friday afternoon, as No. 6 nationally ranked LIU Post dealt a 3-0 defeat to the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team, in the latter's season finale. Sophomore forward Emily Miller scored the game-winning goal in the 37th minute of the Northeast-10 Conference contest at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Field.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce concludes its season at 3-14 (0-12 Northeast-10) and closes the 2016 campaign on a seven-game losing streak. LIU Post improves to 13-3 (9-3 Northeast-10) and will advance to next week's Northeast-10 Championship. For Franklin Pierce, the season stands as the first winless Conference season in program history. The Ravens finished the campaign marred in a scoreless drought of 386:05 and were shutout in each of their final five games.

LIU Post controlled the run of play on the afternoon, to the tune of advantages of 23-6 in shot attempts, 12-3 in shots on goal and 7-5 in penalty corners.

After a scoreless first half, LIU Post took control of the scoreboard as well after the break, with three goals in the opening 15:40 of the second half. Miller opened the scoring just 74 seconds into the second frame, slipping a shot between the legs of Franklin Pierce junior goalkeeper Meaghan Williams (Salem, N.H.). Sophomore midfielder Bailey Martin picked up an assist on Miller's team-leading 16th goal of the season.

The fifth of the season for senior midfielder Steph Mocerino made it 2-0 in the 40th minute. Mocerino put her shot home from 12 yards out on the right side of the circle, off of a feed from senior forward Melissa Quintanilla.

The final insurance marker came in the 51st minute to create the 3-0 final. Junior midfielder Alyssa Lopresti picked the top-right corner from 10 yards out to pot her seventh goal of the campaign.

Williams (3-14) finished with nine saves against 12 shots on goal and suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce. Interestingly, despite the winless league campaign, Williams currently ranks seventh among goalies in the 13-team Northeast-10 in goals-against average (1.47). As a team, the Ravens defense stands eighth in the league in goals against per game (1.47), but will finish dead last in scoring offense, with just 13 goals in 17 games (0.76 per game).

At the other end of the field, senior Ericka Parks (13-3) played the opening 55:21 in net for LIU Post and stopped both shots on her cage to pick up the win. Fellow senior Savanah Cummings made one save over the remaining 14:39 to preserve the shutout.
