Offense Held Silent Again as Field Hockey Falls at No. 3 Saint Anselm, 3-0

MANCHESTER, N.H. (October 25, 2016) – For the second time this season, the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team has been shutout in four straight games. On Tuesday night, it was No. 3 nationally ranked Saint Anselm which scored once in the first half and twice in the second half at Grappone Stadium, to post a 3-0 win over the Ravens in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-13 (0-11 Northeast-10) and has lost six in a row, while Saint Anselm improves to 15-2 (10-1 Northeast-10) and has won seven straight. Saint Anselm controlled play throughout the night, to the tune of advantages of 16-5 in shot attempts, 11-2 in shots on goal and 12-1 in penalty corners.

Saint Anselm got the only goal it would need on Tuesday in the 26th minute. Senior midfielder Rose Mooney took the initial, bouncing shot on the play and wound up with an assist, as junior forward Allia Connolly redirected the ball past the keeper to tie for the team lead with her seventh goal of the season.

The Hawks would add a pair of insurance markers in the second half to create the 3-0 final. First, in the 39th minute, Mooney put away a penalty stroke for her fourth goal of the campaign. Later, in the 59th minute, junior midfielder Mia Vecchione split a pair of defenders and beat the keeper for her third score of the year.

Junior goalkeeper Meaghan Williams (Salem, N.H.) finished with seven saves against 11 shots on goal and took the loss (3-13), while junior back Lauren Grimard (Turners Falls, Mass.) chipped in a defensive save for the Ravens. For Saint Anselm, senior Katherine Sears (15-2) stopped both shots on her goal to pick up the win and her fourth shutout of the season.

The Ravens return to the field on Friday, Oct. 28, when they travel to LIU Post for a Northeast-10 contest. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium in Brookville, N.Y.
