Canavan Hat Trick Stuns No. 4 Stonehill; Field Hockey Collects 3-2 Road Victory

Fahey notches assist

Canavan Canavan's first career multiple-goal game became her first career hat trick as well on Tuesday night at Stonehill.

EASTON, Mass. (October 21, 2014) – Freshman forward Carly Canavan (Kingston, N.Y.) poured in three goals on Tuesday night to erase a 2-0 deficit and lead the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team to a 3-2 win over No. 4 nationally ranked Stonehill in Northeast-10 Conference play at W.B. Mason Stadium. Senior forwards Jennifer Foley and Emily Sideris scored in defeat for Stonehill.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 5-6 (2-2 Northeast-10), while Stonehill falls to 8-2 (3-2 Northeast-10). For the Ravens, the win avenges a 4-1 loss at home against the Skyhawks in non-conference play on Sept. 20.

Stonehill jumped to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first half, as Foley scored in the 11th minute and Sideris struck in the 13th. In the 11th, Foley and junior forward Erika Kelly broke in behind the defense. Kelly had the ball on the left side and sent a cross to the right post for Foley, who easily finished her fourth goal of the season on the tap-in. In the 13th, off a penalty corner, sophomore midfielder Sarah Morse set up the third of the season for Sideris, who put her shot into the top-right corner.

The Ravens got started on the comeback trail before the first half expired, as Canavan began to steal the show. In the 28th minute, she knocked home a loose ball in front of the cage for her third goal of the season, to pull Franklin Pierce within a goal before the intermission.

Less than 15 minutes into the second half, in the 48th minute, Canavan would strike again to draw the Ravens level at 2-2. Sophomore midfielder Andrea Fahey (Hudson, Mass.) set things up with a pass from the left side to Canavan, who was left unattended in front of the net and finished the play off from there. For the freshman Canavan, it marked the first multiple-goal game of her young career.

Canavan was not done just yet, however. The game went nearly 20 minutes without further scoring, but she completed her hat trick in the 67th minute, with just 3:07 remaining, to send the Ravens away with the 3-2 win. The goal came off a turnover, as Stonehill saw a pass deflected while attempting to clear its half of the field. Ultimately, Canavan was left one-on-one with the keeper and beat senior Elizabeth Genovese up top to cap the scoring.

For Franklin Pierce, Canavan's performance marked the ninth hat trick in program history, as well as the first in over three years. The most recent three-goal performance by a Raven came at Bentley on Oct. 12, 2011, when Tia Levins '12 notched her second career hat trick.

Stonehill led the way in shot attempts, 24-12, on Tuesday night, but the more telling stats saw a tighter margin. The Skyhawks also held advantages, though much smaller, in shots on goal (12-9) and penalty corners (7-5).

Freshman goalkeeper Meaghan Williams (Salem, N.H.) piled up 10 saves to pick up the win (5-6) in front of the cage for Franklin Pierce. Genovese finished with five saves and suffered the loss (8-2) between the pipes for Stonehill.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 25, when they travel to American International for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Abdow Field in Springfield, Mass.
