Kelly’s Career Day Helps Field Hockey to 4-0 Shutout of SCSU

Fahey adds goal, assist

Kelly Kelly had her second career two-goal game on Saturday against SCSU.

RINDGE, N.H. (October 18, 2014) – Senior forward Courtney Kelly (Plymouth, Mass.) piled up a career-best five points on two goals and one assist on Saturday afternoon to lead the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team to a 4-0 win over Southern Connecticut State in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. Sophomore midfielder Andrea Fahey (Hudson, Mass.) added a goal and an assist in the win for Franklin Pierce.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 4-6 (1-2 Northeast-10), while Southern Connecticut State falls to 2-8 (0-3 Northeast-10). Franklin Pierce has now swept the two-game season series from the Owls, after also posting a 4-3 win in New Haven, Conn. in non-conference play on Sept. 12. The Ravens have now surpassed their win totals from each of the last two seasons.

Franklin Pierce split its scoring across the two halves on Saturday, as it scored twice in the first half and twice in the second half. Kelly would open the scoring in the 18th minute, with her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Senior midfielder Brittany Lepore (Barnstable, Mass.) -- four days removed from her first career goal -- picked up her first collegiate assist after she pushed the ball towards the net from the top of the circle. Kelly took the feed and finished from the vicinity of the penalty spot by beating SCSU junior goalkeeper Audrey Dolloff inside the right post.

Just 79 seconds later, in the 20th minute, Kelly would pick up her first helper of the season, as she dished the fall off to Fahey on the right side of the circle. Fahey had a lane to shoot and beat Dolloff inside the near post for her second goal of the season and second goal in as many games.

The Ravens tacked on a pair of insurance markers in the second half to create the 2-0 final. First, in the 45th minute, the initial shot by the offense on the play was deflected by the SCSU defense. The ball popped up in the air and ultimately fell to the feet of freshman forward Carly Canavan (Kingston, N.Y.) at the penalty spot. Canavan picked up her second goal of the season as she cleanly beat Dolloff with the ensuing shot.

Later, in the 55th minute, Kelly capped the scoring with her second goal of the afternoon. This time, Fahey had the helper, as the sophomore took a shot from the top of the circle on the right-wing side. Kelly was stationed between Fahey and the cage and was able to redirect the ball en route to notch her fifth goal of the season.

It was the second career multiple-goal game for Kelly, who also scored twice against Southern Connecticut State at Sodexo Field on Nov. 2, 2013. The 5-4 win over the Owls last November was also the last time the Ravens had a player tally five points in a game, as Erin Trainor had two goals and an assist in that contest.

The Ravens controlled the run of play throughout the day, to the tune of a 17-5 advantage in shot attempts, including 11-2 in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Meaghan Williams (Salem, N.H.) stopped both shots on her cage to pick up the win (4-6) for Franklin Pierce and notch her first career shutout in the process. Dolloff finished with seven saves and suffered the loss (2-8) in net for SCSU.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 21, when they travel to Stonehill for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at W.B. Mason Stadium in Easton, Mass. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Wednesday, Oct. 29 against Bentley at 4 p.m.
