Ravens close out 2013 season at home on Saturday

Ravens Field Hockey The Ravens wrap up the campaign on Saturday afternoon at home against SCSU.

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (October 31, 2013) – A snake-bit offense controlled the game but could not find a goal on Thursday afternoon, as the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team suffered a 1-0 loss at Mercy in non-conference play at Mavericks Field. Senior midfielder Nicole Bencsik scored the game's only goal in the win for Mercy.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 2-15 (1-9 Northeast-10), while Mercy improves to 5-12.

Franklin Pierce held advantages, many of them significant, in many areas of the game, with the scoreboard being the key exception. The Ravens piled up a 12-2 advantage in penalty corners, which they used to post a 10-3 advantage in shot attempts and a 6-1 edge in shots on goal.

Mercy's only shot on goal of the contest would stand as the game's only goal. With 3:37 to play in the first half, Bencsik put home her fourth goal of the season, which would later become her second game-winning goal of the campaign. Franklin Pierce had put the Mercy defense under siege for much of the first half, but after the goal, things evened out in the second half. The Ravens amassed only a 3-2 advantage in shots attempts and put only one shot on goal in the second half of the contest.

Freshman goalkeeper Amy Zahensky (Bow, N.H.) went the distance in net for Franklin Pierce, but did not make a save and took the loss (1-12). Senior Kristen Znaniecki stopped all six shots she faced in the Mercy cage to pick up the win (5-11) and her third shutout of the season.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Nov. 2, when they return home to wrap up the season with a non-conference contest against Southern Connecticut State. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge. Franklin Pierce will honor its three-player senior class prior to the start of the game.
