Burnell Burnell found her second goal of the season on Saturday afternoon, as the Ravens nearly pulled out a second-half comeback at Assumption.

WORCESTER, Mass. (October 26, 2013) – Sophomore forward Chelsey Burnell (West Baldwin, Maine) scored with 14:59 remaining on Saturday afternoon to pull the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team within a goal, as it attempted to rally from a 3-0 deficit. However, the Ravens could never find the equalizer, and gave up a late goal to drop a 4-2 decision to Assumption in Northeast-10 Conference play at Multi-Sport Stadium. Sophomore forward Taylor Chase scored twice in the win for Assumption.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 2-13 (1-8 Northeast-10), while Assumption improves to 6-10 (2-6 Northeast-10). The win gives Assumption a sweep in the two-game season series, as the Greyhounds picked up a 6-1 victory in non-conference play in Rindge on Sept. 14.

While there was not much offense either way in the first half, Assumption posted a 9-3 advantage in shot attempts and scored the only goal of the period. In the 23rd minute, freshman forward Meghan Sullivan scored her eighth goal of the season off an assist from sophomore midfielder Kiley Colucci.

The goals came fast and furious in the second half, with Assumption pushing the lead to 3-0 as Chase scored goals in the 49th and 51st minutes. The first was her third of the season, off a feed from freshman midfielder Andrea Koslowski, while Sullivan provided the helper on the second, which came just 2:30 later.

Franklin Pierce responded with goals in the 53rd and 54th minutes to trim the lead back to 3-2. Senior back Jess Rogers (Uxbridge, Mass.) had the first in the aftermath of a penalty corner for her third goal of the campaign. Just 47 seconds later, Burnell put away her second of the year off an assist from freshman midfielder Shannon O'Leary (Florence, Mass.).

The Ravens would stay active in the final 10 minutes, racking up five penalty corners, including three straight inside the final five minutes, but could never come up with the equalizer. In the waning seconds, Assumption created the 4-2 final, as junior forward Paige Anderson put home her sixth of the season with six seconds to play.

Sophomore Erin Wood (Dover, N.Y.) made the start in goal for Franklin Pierce, made six saves against 10 shots on goal and took the loss (1-1). At the other end, senior Heather Philbrick made two saves against four shots on her cage to pick up the win (6-8) for Assumption.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 29, when they return home to host Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
