RINDGE, N.H. (May 19, 2011)
-- The top-seeded Adelphi University Panthers opened the
2011 NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament with a 2-0 win over
sixth-seeded Dowling College on Thursday morning at Pappas Field in
Rindge.
With the win, Adelphi advanced to the winner's bracket of the
regional and will play at 3 p.m. on Friday versus the loser of
Thursday night's Wilmington/Southern Connecticut State game.
Dowling heads to the loser's bracket and will face the loser of
Franklin Pierce/UMass-Lowell on Friday morning at 11 a.m. in an
elimination game.
The story of the game was the impressive pitching performances from
both starters, including Adelphi's Robert Nixon, who improved to
11-1 after going the distance and scattering just four hits, while
striking out eight and walking only two. Dowling's Gabriel Duran
was touched up for two runs in the first, but after that settled
down and also went the distance, yieldinig just those two runs on
seven hits with seven strikeouts and only two walks.
Adelphi scored both of its runs in the bottom of the first inning,
including getting an RBI single from Anthony Zarrella, who laced a
base-hit to left field. Omar Velazquez and Richard McCarren scored
the runs for the Panthers.
